Category 4. Ties, Slurs, Beams, and Stems

Beams Type 1. Segmentation of secondary beams.

Segmentation of secondary beams, used to express the relationship of subgroups of notes within a larger beamed group, is a very effective aid to accurate comprehension.

In Ex. #22 we see an unusual subdivision of beamed groups (literally 1/8 + 1/32 + 1/32 + 1/8 + 1/32 + 1/16 + 3/32 but in reduction 1/8 + 1/16 + 1/8 + 3/16). The parameters used to control the beams are shown in the table.

Ex. #22. Irregularly beamed groups. These examples were created by Leland Smith with SCORE. They appeared in the Directory of Computer Assisted Research in Musicology 3 (1987), 46.
